Now, don’t get me wrong, hobbies are important for everyone! But as a mom, whether you work or are a stay-at-home mom, it’s easy to push your self-care aside to take care of your family.
Making sure to carve out time to do something you love is beneficial to your mental and physical health. Doing a hobby that you love can help lower your stress and boost your confidence. Also, a great thing about most hobbies is that there are so many free resources like Youtube to help you learn.

Top 20 best hobbies for moms:
Reading
Reading is so beneficial, and there are endless options! There are books and stories on any subject that piques your interest.
One great thing about reading is that it sets an excellent example for your children. If your child sees you reading while they are playing, for example, they will know that it’s an enjoyable activity. They might want to join too!
If you don’t enjoy physically reading books, you can try Audible! Listening to audiobooks is a great way to experience exciting stories while being able to do other things. You can listen while in the car or even while doing chores.
Also, if you don’t want the clutter of books in your house, or if you don’t have room, using an E-reader is another great option! I use this one, and I love it!
Painting
The wonderful thing about painting is that you don’t have to be great at it! There are so many incredible paintings out there that are abstract.
If you are interested in picking up painting, here is a great starter kit for acrylic painting, or if you want to try your hand at watercolor, this is a nice kit.
Sewing
Sewing is another one of the hobbies for moms that has a lot of options. You can sew things like toys, clothing, quilts, and really anything your heart desires!
If you are looking for a sewing machine, this one is a nice-quality starter machine.
Exercise
We all know that exercise is so imperative to physical and mental health. If you find a particular activity that you absolutely love, then that can be your hobby!
I know many people love to do things like running, biking, or hiking, but sports like roller-blading are making a comeback!
Don’t be afraid to try things that you think you might not like; you never know until you try!
Gardening
Gardening can be such a peaceful hobby. A bonus is that the whole family can share this hobby!
Whether it’s making a flower bed or creating a garden of fruits and veggies, there are so many different things you can choose to do.
If you think gardening could be your new thing, this is a terrific starter kit with tools and gloves. If your kiddo would enjoy helping, this is an adorable tool kit for them!
Crochet/Knitting
Crocheting is one of my favorite hobbies. There is just something about taking a hook and some yarn and making cute and cuddly things!
If you would like to learn how to crochet, these crochet hooks are what I use, and they are great! If you think knitting would be better for you, these needles are lovely!
Photography
Photography is a great hobby not only because it can be fun but also because you won’t miss capturing a memory!
Another cool thing about photography is that if you have a passion for it and become serious about learning the ins and outs, it can be a very lucrative business! What could be better than creating a business out of something that you love?!
If you want to test the waters, most smartphones have great cameras. If you find you love taking pictures, you can invest in a more premium camera.
Writing
Writing not only lets you get your thoughts out, but it can also get your creativity flowing!
It’s very therapeutic to write what you’re thinking about or about what’s happening in your life. You may find that you prefer to create stories and let your imagination run wild! Plus, writing can easily fit into a morning routine, so you always have consistent time for it.
If you prefer writing in a journal rather than on the computer, this is a beautiful journal.
Blogging
Let’s say you already know that you love writing; blogging might be the perfect hobby for you!
Blogging is fantastic because it allows you to connect with other people around the world. And, depending on what you blog about, you can help others solve problems that you have already gone through, which makes it another one of my favorite hobbies for moms.
Cooking or Baking
If you’re a stay-at-home mom, the chances are that you are already cooking most meals. Turn this chore into a passion by finding new recipes to try!
If you don’t usually bake, go for it! Try making new desserts or other baked goods.
A personal favorite of mine is making bread and other treats in my bread machine. It’s so fun, and everything turns out so delicious. I love making Hawaiian bread and cinnamon rolls!
Scrapbooking
Like photography, scrapbooking can be a great hobby that preserves memories. Creating scrapbooks full of your family’s favorite moments is so unique and will be treasured for decades!
If you aren’t so sure about scrapbooking, it can be fun to simply put your pictures in a photo album. I know I’m not the only one who struggles to print photographs. I have years worth of pictures on my old phones and computer.
It’s fun to go through old photos, print them, and then organize them in a photo album.
Meditation
Meditation is a beautiful activity that anyone can do, and it’s especially beneficial if you have high stress levels.
In addition to meditation, you can give yoga a try! Yoga is excellent for increasing flexibility and lowering stress. You can even get your kiddos included in practicing yoga!
Gaming
Video games are more popular than ever these days! When you hear the words ‘video games,’ you might automatically think it’s not for you. But there are so many kinds of games out there.
My husband got me hooked on Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Nintendo Switch. It’s such a relaxing game for people of all ages!
Hand Lettering
Hand lettering is another pastime that is getting increasingly popular. What’s great about hand lettering is that all you need are some markers and some paper and you are all set!
Similar to hand lettering, calligraphy is another fun activity to learn. This starter set is perfect for getting you learning!
If you find that you love calligraphy or hand lettering, both of these activities are popular categories on sites like Etsy. Many people love buying art prints with cute quotes or invitations with beautiful lettering. Your hobby could bring in some extra cash!

If you are looking for a calm and relaxing hobby, then puzzles might be it!
There are so many kinds of puzzles to choose from, like jigsaw puzzles, sudoku, or even crossword puzzles.
Graphic Design
Graphic design is becoming more and more popular, and like painting, there are so many different things you can make!
You can make things like holiday cards, printables, or even wall art! Graphic design is another hobby you can earn cash from if you have a passion for it.
Online Learning
You may think that learning isn’t a hobby, but it totally is! It’s so fun to gain more knowledge on something interesting to you.
If there is something that you have always wanted to learn about, I can bet you it’s on Udemy.
Udemy is an online learning site with courses on anything, and they always have sales that make the lessons very affordable. My husband and I have both used Udemy for so many different classes!
Volunteer
Volunteering is not only a fun hobby that can get you out of the house, but it’s great for your community and great for your family!

Why are hobbies important for moms to have?
Relaxation
When you have a hobby that you love to do, it’s a great way to relax and recharge. Relaxation is a big proponent of self-care, and it will help you prevent parenting burnout. Having a way to relax is one of the most critical aspects of these hobbies for moms.
Helps Clear Your Mind, And Stay Positive
When you are working on something that brings you joy, it automatically puts you in a good mood. When you are in a good mood, it’s easier to stay positive!
A Creative Outlet
Having a creative outlet can help you express your feelings and emotions. Especially after a hard day, either at work or home, it’s beneficial to unwind by doing something you love.
Meet Others With Similar Interests
Depending on what hobby you choose, there’s a good chance that you can find others that love doing that same hobby.
For example, you might want to take a class to learn more about your hobby or meet people at craft stores interested in the same things as you. Either way, it can be nice to have people to share your hobby with.
Prevents You From Losing Yourself
As I mentioned above, it can be easy to get into a routine of taking care of everything but yourself!
Finding a hobby that you are passionate about can help remind yourself that you were someone before becoming a mom, and that person matters too!
Possibly Income Source
Especially as a stay-at-home mom, the potential of adding more income to your family is tremendous! That’s the great thing about most of these hobbies for moms.
You can turn many of the hobbies on this list into a side income, which can be immensely significant for your self-esteem!
Tips for choosing the best hobby:
As you are looking for a hobby that you will love, here are a couple of things to keep in mind.
Is the hobby in your budget?
If you are on a tight budget, it’s probably not the best idea to choose a hobby that requires a hefty start-up fee.
If you find an activity that you think you’ll love but does need quite a bit of cash to start, take a look around and see if you can get a good deal on what you need.
Do you have enough time for that hobby?
Take a look at how much time you will have to dedicate to your hobby. If you only have 30 minutes a day, you might want to avoid a hobby like painting, as it may take you a while to get set up.
Another great thing about some of these hobbies for moms is that your kids can get involved, too. By having a hobby that your kiddos can help with, you will be able to fit in more time to do that hobby!
When it comes to hobbies, I have also heard that it’s a good idea to have three different kinds of pursuits:
- A hobby that uses your creativity
- A hobby that gets you exercising and active
- A hobby that can make you some money on the side (or more!)
Of course, that kind of idea might not be a fit for everyone, but it’s a great idea to keep in mind. In conclusion, don’t be afraid to try something that might be out of your element! You might just love it.
